This is our most
obvious characteristic. Bloodhounds are very large. Our height is
between 25 and 27 inches. The average weight of a Bloodhound is 80 to 100
pounds, although some (mostly male) Bloodhounds could tip the scale at 120
pounds (or higher!). We are, however not aggressive; this gives us the nickname the
"Gentle Giant." Other nicknames for me are "Big", "Big Red",
"Clifford", "Horse" and many more! Being so big has a good
and bad side. Sometimes, I feel like I just get in the way of everybody,
especially little Cassie. She is always tripping over me! The good side of
being big is that I can scare off people in a heartbeat! Nobody wants to
get near a big dog, with big teeth and a deep bark. But, what they really
don't know is that I wouldn't hurt a fly! But it makes me feel tough. Oh,
and the best thing about being big is that I can easily take food off the
kitchen table! Speaking of food, Bloodhounds are a large breed, so they need to
eat...a lot. This alone, could cost a small fortune! If it's a big dog one
is looking for, well there are not too many bigger than a Bloodhound, but if
it's a small dog, we are definitely not the breed to be given a second look. We
can not be a lap dog, unless, perhaps you are the "Jolly Green Giant"! A
Bloodhound will try to lay down any where, so if you allow it, we will lay on
your favorite chair, couch and bed...leaving very little to no room for, you
guessed it...YOU!
